UBC Farm Workshop: Let Food Be Thy Medicine

Teaching at UBC Farm: Let Food Be Thy Medicine on Thurs., August 22, 2019 5:45 pm This Vancouver workshop explores how to bring the healing effect of herbs into your daily cuisine. Certain herbs are used in the kitchen on a regular basis and although these herbs are used for flavour, they also have a medicinal component. Others are mostly overlooked as a food even though there is great potential for incorporating them into your regular meal plan. When a family member is sick, we can tweak our recipes to make them more conducive to healing. We can prepare food according to the seasons to stay balanced and healthy in all different types of climate and weather. Take home samples of healthy condiments that we will create together. Kootenay Herb Conference, Creston, BC, July 8 – 11, 2016

A great time was had by all at the Kootenay Herb Conference in Creston, BC with many fabulous speakers. I enjoyed giving a fun herb walk at Corn Creek and enjoyed going on Keith Davis' herb walk as well. We harvested devil's club and skunk cabbage roots. I also gave a permaculture lecture, with lots of input.  We were impressed with top notch food by 8 month pregnant, Amy, from Ymir and her team of helpful cooks. Theron's Ymir Bakery provided excellent baking. Rachel worked super hard at organizing the whole event. Here's hoping that someone else carries the torch for the next one, as she is now stepping down.

Coastal Herbalism

Instructing at the Vancouver Island 2015 Herb Gathering in mid-June was a great experience. Lots of young, avid herbalists and herbalists-to-be made it a joy to share my knowledge and experience. The same goes for the Medicinal Herb Garden Tour I gave in Squamish on June 18th and the Vancouver Herb Walk for the Jericho Beach Stewardship Club on the 20th which, get this, had stashed coffee, tea and fresh baking in the woods so that we could come upon it at the end of the walk... That was a first! Thanks to all for making this work experience such a pleasure!

In Person Consultations

The first visit is 1 1/2 hours long & I will take a full history. We will discuss your situation and you will receive a Qi Gong treatment  (a form of energy healing based on the traditional Chinese meridian system). We can discuss which natural remedies are needed, if any, and if they are appropriate for you and your lifestyle. Our herbs are grown organically on our herb farm/orchard in Grand Forks, BC Most of the remedies come from there. These I can send out by mail if necessary, or they will be available for pick up or sometimes I drop them off to you. The follow-up sessions  are 1 hour long. If the situation is minor, then not too many sessions are needed, though people often continue taking the herbs for a while longer. The cost of the herbs is separate from the cost of the sessions. Cost of sessions: First visit is $90.00. Follow ups are $65.00 Kootenay discount: Due to the high unemployment rate in the Kootenay-Boundary area, clients in Grand Forks have a sliding scale option of first visit $75.00 and follow ups at $55.00.
